- Ex Rangers Legend & Scottish International
Willie Henderson was a Rangers star through the 60s and into the 70s. “Wee Willie” was just 5ft 4 ins tall and indeed was somewhat a boy wonder, making his Rangers debut aged just 17 and a year later making his full debut for Scotland.
His skill at beating defenders was just marvellous to watch, his crossing was invariably accurate and he scored all important goals too, one notably being the winner against Slavia Sofia in the 67 Cup Winners Cup semi final. Willie apparently during an Old Firm Rangers-Celtic game in the 60s enquired on the sidelines “How long to go, How long to go ?” whereby the legendary Jock Stein replied “Go and ask the other dugout you bloody fool-this is the Celtic bench !!!” Despite an illustrious career at Rangers this was to end on a sad note as he was to miss out on European glory after “moving from the club under a cloud”, prior to the famous 72 Cup Winners Cup victory against Barcelona.
Willie can been seen at Rangers today on match days providing hospitality and is also a very popular After dinner Speaker. Willie made a total of 426 appearances and scored 62 goals winning 2 League Championships 4 Scottish Cups and 2 Scottish League Cups. He also represented Scotland on 29 occasions.
