Howard Webb has been rated as one of the best referees in the world, he has officiated at the highest levels of football. He has taken charge of some of the most important matches in the domestic game, including the FA Cup Final, and was the first referee to oversee both the finals of the UEFA Champions’ League and FIFA World Cup in the same year.

Howard, from Rotherham, Yorkshire, son of football referee Billy Webb, Howard started his own refereeing career in the local town and county leagues. Combining his refereeing with his full-time job as a policeman, he moved up the divisions as an assistant and then as a full referee, eventually making it to the Premier League, with the Fulham versus Wolverhampton Wanderers at Craven Cottage.

Within two years of officiating his very first Premier League match, Howard was appointed as a FIFA official qualifying him to work on international competitions and within a year, he had officiated at his first international competition (European Under-21 Championship) and in the Champions’ League. There followed appointments at the Under-20s World Cup, the UEFA European Cup, and the Confederations Cup before he became a regular Champions’ League and World Cup Referee, achieving the referee’s dream double in 2013. On retirement from the pitch he was made Technical Director of the Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL).

Praised by players, pundits and managers for his authority and decision-making (although it’s impossible to please everyone) Howard speaks openly reference the pressures of dealing with the scrutiny of millionaires and the media. He also provides and offers an insight to motivation, teamwork and communication skills required to reach the top.
