Born in Surrey on 18th September, 1942. Alex Stepney was one of the greatest goalkeepers of his generation.
He will be forever remembered for a superb save that was instrumental in Manchester United’s European Cup win in 1968.
He made his debut at Millwall in August 1963, moved to Chelsea in 1966 and then was immediately purchased by Sir Matt Busby at Manchester United for £55,000 in 1966, a world record at the time for a goalkeeper.
He made his first appearance for the club in 1966 against Manchester City and went on to help the club win the League Championship in 1967 and the 1968 European Cup.
In 1973 he even managed to score two penalties.
In total he made 535 appearances for United and had 175 clean sheets
Stepney left the club to play with the Dallas Tornado in the North American Soccer League in 1978.
