Nobby Stiles
Nobby Stiles was born in Collyhurst, Manchester on 18 May 1942. Nobby was a United supporter as a boy and went on to fulfil his dream of playing for the greatest team after signing as a 15 year old in 1957. Although small he was nevertheless a battler and hard man of football (who took no prisoners !!). He made his full United debut in 1960 against Bolton Wanderers.
Nobby enjoyed a superb career, winning the European Cup, World Cup and The Old 1st Division Championship.
Stiles made 392 appearances for his beloved United and scored 19 goals. He was later sold to Middlesbrough and spent 2 years at Ayresome Park. This was then followed by a brief spell as player coach at PNE with Bobby Charlton. Nobby later took the manager role at The Hawthorns for 4 years between 1977 and 1981. He went on to The USA and had a spell playing for The Vancouver Whitecaps, before finally hanging up his boots 3 years later.
Between 1989 and 1999 he worked as a coach for the youth development at United and saw the progress of the likes of some of United recent stars: Scholes, Giggs, Beckham, Butt etc.
In 2000 he awarded with the MBE for his services to football and of course winning the World Cup back in 1966.
Nobby is now a very busy and very popular figure on the after dinner circuit.
